## Background

Pavan is a research associate in the Signal Processing and Communications Laboratory, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. Prior to joining the department, he worked at Broadcom Communication Technologies, Bangalore, as a research scientist. He received the B. E. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from B. M. Sreenivasiah College of Engineering, Bangalore, India, the M. E. and Ph.D degrees in Electrical and Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 2005, 2008, and 2013, respectively. For his Ph.D thesis titled "Space Time Block Codes with Low Maximum-Likelihood decoding complexity and large coding gain", he received the Seshagiri-Kaikini medal for the best thesis in the department of Electrical and Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science for the year 2012-2013. He was also awarded the INSPIRE Faculty Award (2016) by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for carrying out independent research (declined offer).

## Research

My research interests are broadly in statistical inference, information theory, and communication theory. In the past, I have worked on space-time transmission schemes for multiple-input, multiple-output wireless systems. In particular, my past research was on obtaining coding schemes with low maximum-likelihood decoding complexity and/or high coding gain. My current interest is in obtaining computationally feasible methods with provable theoretical guarantees for high-dimensional statistical inference. In particular, I am interested in the following:

- Low-complexity algorithms for high-dimensional sparse linear inverse problems with applications to compressed sensing and machine learning.

- Non-parametric shrinkage estimation of high-dimensional (sparse) sequences.
